Collaboration video between Ygazie Emezi and Paulo Arraiano establishig a visual dialogue between Lagos, Portugal and Lagos Nigeria.

*WAYWARD - ‘Chi’, from my father - from the nigerian artist Ygazie Emezi is a short video that touches on the cosmology and ontology of Igbo culture, exploring the intricate interplay between the immaterial world of Chi and the physical realm. It is described by the artist’s father and personified in the video.Drawing from the insights from Chinua Achebe, WAYWARD illuminates the duality of existence, where “the world we live in has its double and counterpart in the realm of spirits. A man lives here and his chi lives there.” It questions the repercussions that arise when a human being, or “mmadu,” is disconnected from their personal deity. Through Yagazie’s craftsmanship utilizing locally sourced raffia to hand-make a masquerade that represents the spirit world, WAYWARD transcends the boundaries of the physical and immaterial, offering insight into the consequences of dissonance from our destinies. It weaves a timeline of worlds where both mmadu and Chi are simultaneously.
